HARARE — Veteran politician Saviour Kasukuwere is making waves in Zimbabwean politics, successfully uniting opposition leaders outside Nelson Chamisa’s CCC in what insiders are calling a historic coalition. Sources say this group is now the largest gathering of activists and politicians set to challenge the ruling ZANU-PF in the crucial 2026-2027 political cycle.

The move is widely seen as a direct lead-up to the 2027 ZANU-PF congress, where party leadership and strategic direction will be cemented — making the timing of Kasukuwere’s coalition critical. Analysts say the united front aims to apply maximum pressure on the government while offering a coordinated alternative to Chamisa’s mainstream opposition.

“Kasukuwere has shown real political skill, bringing together factions that have long operated independently,” said a Harare-based political observer. “This is a serious signal that the opposition can be organized outside the CCC.”

The coalition reportedly includes disillusioned former opposition figures, civic activists, and smaller party leaders, all motivated by a shared goal of challenging ZANU-PF’s dominance and influencing the political agenda ahead of the 2027 congress.

Observers say the group’s strategy is twofold: mobilize grassroots support and strategically position itself to exploit weaknesses in ZANU-PF’s upcoming internal processes. The alliance is also seen as a way to attract donor attention and resources, consolidating its influence over the next two years.

“This is more than just numbers,” said one analyst. “The symbolism of a united opposition outside Chamisa’s umbrella is huge. It tells both ZANU-PF and the public that there is a coordinated force ready to challenge the status quo.”

Political insiders caution, however, that keeping the coalition cohesive will be a challenge. Zimbabwe’s opposition has historically been prone to internal rivalries, and maintaining unity ahead of the critical 2027 period will require deft management.

For now, Kasukuwere’s coalition has grabbed the spotlight, promising a grand showdown with ZANU-PF and signaling a more competitive and dynamic political scene in the years leading up to the 2027 congress.

“The next two years are going to be decisive,” said another analyst. “If Kasukuwere keeps this coalition together, Zimbabwe could see a political shake-up like never before.”
